ASB’s Core Values and Mission

Dear Community,

Below, we share ASB’s Mission and Core Values. On October 8/9, 2010, twenty-nine community members formally affirmed the school’s commitment to our Mission and added two new values to our list of Core Values. To bring thirty people – educators, parents, students, and staff – with different perspectives and backgrounds to the table and process these meant that we covered a lot of territory and considered ASB, its purpose and future from multiple angles. We are interested in your thoughts.

Core values are the principles that guide an organization’s internal conduct as well as its relationship with the external world. Core values inform all decisions in the strategic planning process.

ASB’s Core Values

Personal

  • Each person has equal intrinsic value
  • People are responsible for the choices they make
  • All people have potential for growth
  • Internal motivation is the most powerful driver of learning and success
  • A balanced lifestyle is the essence of well-being

Interpersonal

  • Mutual trust and respect are essential for healthy, enduring relationships
  • Embracing our interdependence is vital for the community to flourish
  • New: Practice, perseverance, and reflection are integral to a culture of excellence
  • New: We are the trustees of our environment

A mission statement describes of an organization’s core purpose, which typically remains unchanged. (Objectives should evolve as internal and external contexts change.) A good mission statement should 1. describe the direction of the organization, 2. help an organization see what is important and what is not, and 3. indicate who the organization serves.

ASB’s Mission

We inspire all of our students to continuous inquiry, empowering them with the skills, courage, optimism, and integrity to pursue their dreams and enhance the lives of others.

Our work on each Strategic Objective should be informed by our Core Values and Mission. The Mission defines our horizon and the values describe our beliefs about how to reach that horizon.

In order for ASB to continue to improve and meet the needs of our students in a changing world, the Values and Mission should serve as our beacons.

Do our Mission and Core Values shine a light on what we care about most in our work with our students and with each other? How? Is there anything that you still cherish about other Missions and Core Values sets that you been a part of in the past? If so, please share. Your thoughts are welcome.

ASB’s Learning Objectives

Dear Community,

Below, we share ASB’s Learning Objectives drafted by twenty-nine community members on October 8/9, 2010. To bring thirty people – educators, parents, students, and staff – with different perspectives and backgrounds to the table and process these meant that we covered a lot of territory and considered ASB, its purpose and future from multiple angles. We are interested in your thoughts.

Learning Objectives are the basic building blocks of a school’s strategic plan and they should underpin all of our strategic thinking at ASB, since student learning is our core activity. Organizational objectives typically comprise bundles of potential specific goals.

ASB School-wide Learning Objectives

  • All ASB students are creative and adaptable, using inquiry and relevant skills in the continual pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and personal meaning.
  • All ASB students apply attitudes and skills to pursue their dreams with courage, integrity, and resilience.
  • All ASB students identify interpersonal, social, and environmental challenges and take action to positively impact their world.
  • All ASB students embrace their India experience enabling them to become more effective global citizens.

Our work on each Strategic Objective should target these Learning Objectives as outcomes. Does that mean if we don’t meet every objective by 2016, we have failed? Not at all. These represent specific locations on the horizon of the Mission statement. By keeping these in our sight now and in the future, our change agenda for the school for the next five years will meet the needs of our students as we have defined them.

As ASB continues to improve and meet the needs of our students in a changing world, these objectives should guide us toward our Mission.

How will schools need to change to prepare students for their futures? In what ways will these objectives compel us to adapt to a shifting instructional landscape? What other “big ideas” should we have in front of us? Your thoughts are welcome.

ASB’s Strategic Objectives

Dear Community,

Below, we share the school’s Strategic Objectives drafted by thirty community members on October 8/9, 2010. To bring thirty people – educators, parents, students, and staff – with different perspectives and backgrounds to the table and process these meant that we covered a lot of territory and considered ASB and its future from multiple angles. We are interested in your thoughts.

Strategic Objectives are the targets that we need to achieve in order to realize our Mission and be successful relative to our Learning Objectives. Typically, organizations consider things like innovation, human resources, organizational skills/capacity, social responsibility, local markets/external context, measures of effectiveness as they articulate strategies.

ASB’s Strategic Objectives

To live our core values, mission and learning objectives, we will …

Learning
employ evolving curricula and instruction, innovative technologies, and meaningful community engagements, to position ASB learners as thought leaders and change agents of tomorrow.

Talent
develop ASB as a professional learning center that attracts and develops world-class faculty and staff through engaging and inspiring growth opportunities.

Advancement
distinguish our school in the local and global communities and effectively engage our stakeholders and foster partnerships.

Resources
develop and use resources to provide the highest quality facilities, technology, and programs while practicing fiscal and environmental accountability.

An Action Team is assigned to each Strategic Objective and will work on it through February. Those teams explore each strategy with the aim of writing specific End Results that will help us reach our objectives. These End Results will form the change agenda for the school for the next five years.

In order for ASB to continue to improve and meet the needs of our students in a changing world, these objectives should stretch us in the coming years to continue to close in our Mission.

Will these objectives stretch us to become a better school for our students? How? What do you hope to see come out in the End Results? Your thoughts are welcome.
